Here we go with another Benjamin Moore paint color favorite. Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore is one of my favorite greige colors on the market. I call it my “gateway to greige” because it is the first color I saw in a photo on instagram that made me want to consider greige/beige in my home.

Edgecomb Gray HC-173 is one of the most popular neutral colors from Benjamin Moore. The HC stands for Historical Collection. Y’all know how I feel about historical colors and houses. It’s not hard to see why this color is so hot right now!
What Color Is Edgecomb Gray By Benjamin Moore?
A question I hear a lot is what color is Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore? More gray or beige? Edgecomb Gray is a gray paint color with a smidgen of beige in it.
The true color always depends on the lighting situation. It leans beige and gray because it is right on the line between these two colors so some will argue it’s more taupe/beige and other will see more gray.
Is Edgecomb Gray By Benjamin Moore Warm Or Cool?
Edgecomb Gray is a WARM, soft gray paint color with hints of beige and taupe. It can definitely look cool next to some paint colors and in certain lighting. The versatility of this color is one of the reasons it is so widely used.
Different lighting situations and different directional facing rooms can make it lean more warm or cool as well. In North facing light, it will lean more gray. South facing light is warm and yellow so it will bring out more of the beige undertones.
East and West lighting shift with the rise and fall of the sun so you will get both cooler and warmer tones of the color depending on the time of day.
What Is Edgecomb Gray’s LRV?
Quick reminder on LRV, it stands for Light Reflectance Value. It is a scale that measures how much light a paint color can reflect. The scale is from 0-100 (0 being True Black and 100 being Pure White). Now that that’s out of the way, Edgecomb Gray has an LRV of 63.
So just like it’s color, its LRV is right in the middle of the road. Not too dark and not too light. Edgecomb Gray has a lot of depth, but still can reflect a lot of light back into a room. It can brighten up a room and would not be too overwhelming to paint a whole house with.
Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore Undertones
Undertones are always tricky, even in super popular and widely liked colors. Edgecomb Gray is a pretty perfectly balanced paint color with not too threatening undertones so don’t worry.
It can show undertones of greens and grays. In some cases, you’ll see some violet or pink showing through. This doesn’t mean you will literally see green or violet in the middle of your greige colored walls, but it means you might see shades of it here or there depending different variable.
These variables could be the other paint colors in the room such as the trim and ceiling, decor, if there is other green elements in the room, what color the furniture is and of course how much light is coming in and from where. This is why you should always get a sample of your paint colors.

Edgecomb Gray pairs really well with creamy warm white colors. I personally love Edgecomb Gray as a color to use on trim and moldings. If you have board and batten or chair rail with beadboard underneath, edgecomb gray looks beautiful on these wall treatments.

Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore is a gorgeous greige color that can be used in so many different places. I really love this color because of the historical significance and its versatility to go with lots of different colors.
In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with this color. If you are thinking about using this color in your home, I would say absolutely go for it! My advice is to think about what your color palette is for your room, home and to get samples always!
